Tbilisi-80, the Soviet Union’s
first ever official rock music
festival, begins in Tbilisi,
Georgia. Here’s a selection of
some of the prize winning
songs. And here’s some
footage of Aquarium playing
at the festival.
2000 AD Prog 156 - featuring
Part 1 of the 26-part Judge
Dredd epic, The Judge Child,
which will take Dredd on a
huge journey out of Mega City
One and, for the first time, off-
world. Of all the stories I read
in 2000 AD at the time, this
was my favourite. There’s also
a competition to win a Thur
Flash Pistol and/or a copy of
the 2000 AD Space Quiz Book.
ITV, 9.45 pm: Tales of the
Unexpected - Skin

ITV: Making a Living - Arthur Scargill speaks to a small
group of young adults as part of a series focusing on
the views of political figures who have “firmly and
publicly stated views on the major issues of today.”
Absolutely fascinating and highly recommended if
you’re interested in where the country was at
politically in the early 1980s. It’s basically a cheap,
young person’s version of Question Time, but they’re
actually talking about the fundamental ideas
underpinning the guest’s political views. And they
don’t necessarily agree with him - or whatever they
think he stands for.
ITV, 7 pm: The Kenny Everett
Video Show - Series 3, Episode
3, featuring:
•
Singing the Blues Dave
Edmunds & Rockpile
•
Carrie Cliff Richard
•
The Hardest Part Blondie
(as interpreted by Hot
Gossip - watch out for a
sneaky cameo by Bob
Geldof)
BBC 1, 7.15 pm: Blake’s Seven -
Sarcophagus. Another great
episode with a strong sci-fi
concept, which for once
actually gives Jan Chappell
something to do. Now it’s
Dayna’s turn to be woefully
underused, but even she gets a
song. Brilliant character work
with some genuinely bristling
moments. It might be a bit
more Star Trek than your
typical Blake’s 7, but the show’s
earned its right to be the
British Trek now.

Robert Mugabe is elected
Prime Minister of an
independent Zimbabwe. The
joys and concerns are well-
captured by this edition of
Newsnight, featuring
illuminating interviews with
Mugabe, Joshua Nkomo and a
handful of devastated white
Rhodesians.

Look-in No 11: with articles about Queen and Suzi
Quatro, and a competition to win a Magical Musical
Thing. A tiny ‘Star Snap’ piece about judo star Brian
Jacks reminds me that around this time, my Dad
once spotted him in a motorway service station and
asked him for his autograph - ostensibly for me,
though I didn’t really know who he was. It might have
been written on the back of a fag packet (my parents
were both smokers then, much to my dismay). I’ve
no idea what happened to it.

ITV, 8.30 pm: TV Eye - a difficult conversation between
two opposing forces in the ongoing steel strike - Bill
Sirs, General Secretary of the ISTC and Sir Charles
Villiers, Chairman of the British Steel Corporation.
Only recommended if you’re really into the minutiae
of 1980s UK trade disputes.
